• A giant anteater's tongue is longer than its head — up to 60 centimetres of pure muscle that flicks in and out 150 times per minute. It's coated in sticky saliva from oversized salivary glands, yet the anteater has no teeth at all. A single animal can consume 30,000 ants and termites in a day, swallowing them whole without chewing, which is why their stomach is built like a grinding organ with thick muscular walls.
• Giant anteaters have no ears on the outside of their heads — just ear holes — because they evolved to push their snouts deep into termite mounds where sound is useless and hearing protection matters. Their sense of smell is 40 times sharper than a human's, letting them detect a nest the size of a pinhead from metres away in dense forest.
• When a jaguar or puma attacks, a giant anteater doesn't run. It drops onto its hind legs, tucks its 90-centimetre tail around its body like armour, and slashes upward with claws as long as a grizzly bear's. Those front claws can tear open a termite mound hard enough to resist a machete, and they've been documented drawing blood from predators twice their size.
• A mother anteater carries her single calf on her back for up to a year, keeping it hidden under a fortress of her own hair while she forages. The calf learns the exact smell-signatures of 'good' termite mounds by following its mother through the forest, knowledge that takes months to acquire — there's no instinct for which nests are worth the effort.
• Giant anteaters have shrunk their entire digestive system because they never need to process food in their stomach — everything bypasses it almost immediately. They have no cecum, a reduced small intestine, and a stomach that functions more like a storage pouch than a processing plant. This radical efficiency means they can eat vast quantities without the metabolic cost, but it also means they're extremely vulnerable to parasites and disease, making habitat loss in fragmented forests a slow death sentence.
