• A flying-fox can drink nectar so fast it processes a litre of liquid through its body in under an hour — then excretes the water almost immediately to stay light enough to fly. This makes them living juice extractors: they drink for energy, not hydration, and their metabolism runs so hot they burn calories faster than almost any other mammal their size.
• The Pacific flying-fox has a nose that looks backwards. Their nostrils face downward into grooves that channel airflow directly into sensory tissue, letting them smell nectar and ripe fruit from 20 metres away in total darkness — a nose so efficient they barely need echolocation at all, unlike their insect-eating bat cousins.
• Watch a flying-fox hang upside down and you're looking at a 600-gram mammal with a one-metre wingspan folded into a furry package. They roost in colonies of thousands, hanging shoulder-to-shoulder from mangrove and forest canopy branches. A single tree can hold 10,000 individuals — the weight equivalent of 20 adult humans crammed into one oak.
• Female Pacific flying-foxes have delayed implantation: they mate in March, but the fertilised egg doesn't begin growing until June. This evolutionary hack lets them time birth to arrive when fruit is most abundant — a three-month insurance policy against starvation written into their biology.
• Island by island across the South Pacific, flying-fox populations have crashed by 90 per cent in the last 50 years. Hunting, habitat loss, and cyclones have decimated them, yet they remain keystone pollinators and seed-dispersers for rainforests that have no other large frugivore to do the job.
