Fascinating facts about the Mexican Agouti
- Weighing as much as a small toddler, Mexican agoutis tip the scales between 2 kg and 5 kg as adults. Their bodies stretch from 446 mm to 587 mm, while the tail adds another 20 mm to 30 mm of length. This size lets them sprint across the forest floor, enabling quick escapes from predators and efficient digging of seed caches. Their heft also means they can crack hard-shelled nuts that many forest animals cannot, directly influencing seed dispersal dynamics.
- Pregnant females bulk up on seeds, raising the protein, fat and energy content of their diet just before giving birth. Gestation lasts 104 to 120 days, after which one or two precocial pups emerge with fur and open eyes, ready to follow their mother for up to seven weeks of nursing. This early independence lets the young learn foraging routes and seed-handling skills while still receiving milk.
- Agoutis act as forest gardeners by burying seeds 2 cm to 8 cm deep and retrieving them up to eight months later. This scatter-hoarding spreads seeds of trees like Brosimum alicastrum and Cymbopetalum baillonii across the understory, increasing germination chances and creating a mosaic of saplings. Their ability to open hard husks, such as those of Brazil nuts, makes them one of the few mammals that can unlock these high-energy foods for the ecosystem, linking animal nutrition to tree reproduction.
- The agouti now faces a steep decline: over the past ten years its population has dropped more than 80 %, and about 89 % of its original lowland forest has vanished. Classified as Vulnerable, the species is squeezed by expanding agriculture, urban sprawl and hunting for its high-protein meat (≈120 kcal per 100 g).
- A single breeding pair stakes out a territory 1 to 2 hectares. Within this patch they build burrows in hollowed trunks or under large roots. They face predation from cats, birds of prey, snakes and jaguars.
