• A Sumatran orangutan can craft at least 60 different tools—fishing sticks for extracting insects from bark, leaf sponges to collect drinking water, even umbrellas woven from leaves during rain. They learn each technique by watching their mother, then refining it across a lifetime. No wild ape invents tools more prolifically, yet until the 1990s scientists assumed only humans did this.
• Their arm span stretches to 2.3 metres—longer than a tall human is high—but their body weighs barely 40 kg. This isn't weakness; it's engineering. Those impossibly long arms let them hang from thin branches that can't support a heavier ape, reaching fruit no other forest creature can access. They're built like trapeze artists, not wrestlers.
• Every night a Sumatran orangutan builds a new bed by weaving leaves and branches into a nest high in the canopy—roughly 100,000 beds across a lifetime if they reach 50 years old. They test the structure with their weight before settling in, a ritual that takes 5 to 15 minutes. No other ape sleeps in a fresh bed every single night.
• Mothers teach their offspring for six to seven years—longer than any other great ape except humans. A juvenile watches which fruit is ripe, where to find water in drought, which trees hold insects. This knowledge transfer is so slow and deliberate that females typically raise only three or four offspring in their entire lives, making population recovery glacially difficult.
• Since 1950, habitat loss has shrunk their population from roughly 14,000 to fewer than 6,500 today. They exist now only on Sumatra; their sister species was pushed entirely into Borneo. A single Sumatran orangutan needs about 6 square kilometres of undisturbed forest to survive—an area roughly the size of 850 football fields. Their survival depends on forest staying forest.
