• A fish that usually measures just 2–5 cm can stretch to 7.8 cm when it lives in salty water, and those salty-water individuals grow faster, a trait that runs in their genes. Bigger bodies help them dodge the intense predation that freshwater cousins face, showing how environment can shape size in just a few generations.
• From the Orinoco delta in Venezuela down to Uruguay, this little livebearer is a staple of Brazil’s lagoon ecosystems, yet it has also turned up on Caribbean islands like Puerto Rico and Martinique after humans introduced it to eat mosquito larvae. Its ability to survive in true seawater suggests some of those distant populations may have arrived on their own, blurring the line between native and introduced.
• It thrives in standing waters ranging from fresh streams to hypersaline pools, tolerating temperature swings that would crush many fish. In brackish sites the water is often plant-free, while fresh habitats are lined with thick marginal vegetation, illustrating the species’ flexibility to dominate very different pond worlds.
• A female carries her young for about 28 days, then births 6–10 fry, each barely 6 mm long, but a particularly large mother can release over 100 babies in one go. The juveniles cling to Mom for a few hours before venturing out, and they are ready to reproduce themselves in just 3–4 months, a rapid turnover that fuels their boom in new habitats.
• By devouring mosquito larvae, this fish has been deployed to curb mosquito numbers in ponds, turning a tiny predator into a public-health ally. At the same time, it feeds the food chain: freshwater predators like Hoplias malabaricus snack on them, and parasitic worms use them as a stepping-stone host before ending up in snook, linking tiny fish to larger ecological impacts.
