• When threatened, the balloonfish inflates its highly elastic stomach, swelling its whole body two to three times in diameter. The stomach fills with air from birds or water from fish, then expands the peritoneal cavity. Its skin can stretch about 40 % of its original length before stiffening, and the lack of pleural ribs and a pelvic girdle lets the vertebral column bend, creating a near-perfect sphere that few predators can swallow.
