About the Prussian Carp

The Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio, is a deep-bodied, robust cyprinid that glints silver in the water, sometimes catching a faint golden tinge on its scales. Growing to about 10–35 cm (4–14 in) in length, the fish can reach a maximum of 45 cm (18 in) and 3 kg (6.6 lb). Its lateral line bears 27–32 relatively large scales, fewer than the closely related crucian carp, and its tail forks more sharply, giving it a distinctive silhouette among the slow-moving rivers, lakes, and ponds it now inhabits across Europe, North America, and Asia. Though originally from Siberia or central Europe, the species thrives wherever aquatic vegetation blankets the margins, from the Volga and Kama rivers in European Russia to quiet backwaters elsewhere, feeding opportunistically on plankton, invertebrates, plant material and detritus. What makes the Prussian carp especially surprising is its reproductive wizardry. Females can trigger gynogenesis, laying eggs that require sperm from related species yet incorporate no paternal DNA, effectively “stealing” genetic material to fertilise their own progeny. They also produce hundreds of thousands of eggs per spawning event, and a 2020 study showed that a tiny fraction of these eggs survive passage through waterfowl digestive tracts, emerging viable from feces. This endozoochorous dispersal, though rare, hints at an overlooked pathway for the species’ rapid spread, underscoring its reputation as a highly invasive fish beyond its native range.
