It's the same strategy a koala uses, yet this possum weighs just 0.5 kg and lives 600 metres higher in the rainforest canopy, in a niche where few other leaf-eaters can survive.

It exists in one of Australia's most threatened ecosystems, yet few Australians know it exists.
• At night it moves through the canopy with an acrobatic precision that betrays its closest relatives: lemurs of Madagascar, not Australian possums. Scientists now know the lemuroid ring-tailed possum and lemurs share a common ancestor that lived 60+ million years ago, before Australia drifted away from the southern continents.
