Fascinating facts about the Lechwe

• A lechwe's hind legs are noticeably longer than its front legs—a proportional imbalance that transforms it into a wet-savanna specialist. This skeletal tilt allows them to wade through 1 metre of water while staying upright, moving at speeds other antelopes can't match on flooded ground. On dry land, that same shape makes them clumsy and vulnerable, which is why they almost never leave the marshes of the Okavango Delta and Kafue Flats. Evolution shaped them for one place so completely they can't easily escape it.
• Male lechwes perform a strange courtship ritual called 'marking'—they lick females' genital area and then curl their upper lip upward, exposing a sensory organ in the roof of their mouth. This grimace, called a flehmen response, allows them to chemically analyse whether a female is fertile. It looks grotesque to human eyes but it's a precision tool: males can detect pregnancy hormones invisible to sight, hearing, or smell alone.
• A lechwe's coat changes colour with the seasons by up to three shades—from dark chestnut in the dry season to burnished gold when water floods their grasslands. This isn't shedding; the same hair follicles shift pigmentation in response to changing light and humidity. Scientists still don't fully understand the mechanism, but it works as seasonal camouflage, keeping them invisible against shifting wetland backgrounds.
• When threatened, a lechwe's first instinct is to bound directly into water—splashing and leaping in explosive jumps that can cover 4 metres in a single bound. A pursuing predator (lion, wild dog, or hyena) either can't follow into deep water or loses speed immediately. Lechwes have been watched fleeing into marshes that would drown their pursuers, then circling back to shore once danger passes.
• The northern and southern lechwe populations diverged into separate subspecies roughly 10,000 years ago when climate change fractured the wetlands that once connected them across Southern Africa. Today only about 40,000 remain—down from hundreds of thousands—split between isolated swamp systems that have shrunk by 90% since the 1960s. They're trapped in fragments of their own habitat, unable to recolonise lost ground because their bodies simply can't survive on dry savanna long enough to reach the next marsh.
