• A tantalus monkey's eyelids are bare and papery-thin, creating an unsettling stare that gave the species its name — from the Greek myth of a man cursed to watch food and water forever beyond his reach. But those naked lids aren't cosmetic: they're packed with blood vessels that help regulate body temperature in the scorching African savanna, and the pale skin beneath acts as a visual signal to other monkeys about the individual's health and status. A sick or stressed tantalus shows darker, bloodier eyelids; a healthy one, pale and clear.
• At dawn, tantalus monkeys make a sound that carries across the savanna like a mechanical alarm: a loud, machine-gun-like chattering called a 'ka-train' call, repeated up to 20 times in succession. • A tantalus monkey's cheek pouch can stretch to hold the volume of its entire stomach — roughly equivalent to a tennis ball of fruit crammed into each side of its face. The pouches allow it to grab and stuff food during dangerous feeding periods, then retreat to safety to eat slowly and digest. A single male has been documented carrying enough fruit to feed itself for an entire day, bouncing through the canopy with chipmunk-like bulging cheeks while predators like leopards and eagles hunt below.
• Tantalus monkeys are one of the few primates documented deliberately eating clay from river banks and soil — a behaviour called geophagy that appears tied to their seasonal diet of unripe, acidic fruit. The clay chemically binds to toxins and tannins in the raw fruit, allowing their stomachs to process otherwise inedible food.
