• A pampas fox can rotate its ears 90 degrees independently — swivelling each one toward a different sound source to triangulate prey moving beneath tall grass. While hunting, it stops dead and listens for the rustle of a mouse 10 metres away, then pounces with a precision jump that covers 1.5 metres in a single bound. This ear-first hunting strategy means it catches rodents in near-total darkness.
• The pampas fox weighs just 3 to 4 kilograms — smaller than a house cat — yet it's a solitary apex predator across the Argentine grasslands, dominating landscapes where jaguars and pumas are almost extinct. It hunts alone because the pampas itself is a low-density prey field; packing together would mean starving together. One fox needs a home range of 20 square kilometres to find enough food.
• Unlike most canids, pampas foxes are monogamous. A pair bonds for life, occupying the same territory year-round and raising two to four pups together each breeding season. They don't hunt as a pack — instead, a mated pair will synchronise their movements across the grassland, flushing insects and small mammals toward each other like a two-fox net.
• The pampas fox has never had a predator-prey relationship with humans, making it one of South America's canids without a bounty history. But habitat loss has cut its range by 40% since the 1970s, replaced by agriculture and cattle ranches. It survives in protected areas only because grassland ecosystems were seen as worthless — land too marginal for farming — leaving these foxes the scraps no one wanted.
• A pampas fox's diet swings wildly by season: in summer it's 80% insects (grasshoppers, beetles, larvae), but winter forces it to hunt rodents, birds, and the occasional armadillo. This flexibility meant it survived the last ice age when other large canids vanished. Today it's one of only two canids in South America that depends more on invertebrates than vertebrates for its annual calories.
