Fascinating facts about the Puku

• A puku's back legs are noticeably longer than its front legs — a quirk that gives it a permanently crouched posture and makes it look ready to bolt at any second. This anatomy is no accident. It lets them accelerate horizontally across open savanna faster than predators expect, and pivot on a dime. Only about 30,000 pukus remain in the wild, mostly in Zambia and Tanzania.
• Male pukus don't migrate. While other antelope species drift across seasons, puku males stay put in tiny territories — sometimes just 1 square kilometre — and defend them against rivals year-round with horn clashes that can be heard hundreds of metres away. This sedentary life makes them predictable prey, and it's one reason their population is under pressure.
• Pukus are built for grass, not leaves. Their teeth are specially adapted to graze on short, new shoots — the kind that sprout near water sources — which is why you'll almost never find one more than 2 kilometres from a river or wetland. In dry seasons, they're trapped: they can't follow other antelope inland to fresh vegetation, so they stay put and suffer through drought.
• A newborn puku weighs about 3.5 kilograms — roughly the same as a terrier puppy — and hides in thick reeds for its first three weeks while its mother returns to feed it. This hiding strategy evolved in open habitats where running alongside mum gets you killed. The fawn doesn't follow its mother until its legs are strong enough to outrun a lion at full speed.
• Pukus are almost never seen alone. They move in herds of 5 to 20 individuals, and their social bonds are so tight that if one spots a predator, it doesn't just flee — it stops and watches the threat while alerting others with sharp barks. This alarm-calling behaviour gives herd-mates a few extra seconds to escape, even if the caller gets caught. It's a costly gift, and it reveals why living in groups matters more than living long.
