• A Large Tortoiseshell's caterpillar can strip a willow branch bare in hours, then vanish — it pupates hanging upside down like a jewelled pendant, metallic gold spots glinting in sunlight. This is camouflage as art: the chrysalis looks so much like a water droplet or leaf scar that birds ignore it entirely. Evolution spent millions of years making it invisible, and it works so well that finding one feels like discovering treasure in a tree.
• After hibernating through winter, a Large Tortoiseshell emerges in early spring — sometimes as early as February in southern Europe. But here's the catch: their wing patterns shift with the seasons. Spring butterflies are darker and smaller. Summer broods are paler and larger. When humans straighten rivers, fell willows for timber, or drain wetlands, Large Tortoiseshells have nowhere else to go. They've become living indicators of whether an ancient landscape is still wild enough to hold its structure.
• Male Large Tortoiseshells hunt mates by perching on high branches and darting down at passing females — a hunting technique that works in the dappled light of old forests. They're sun-worshippers that bask with wings open to absorb heat, vulnerable and visible. This reliance on warm, open perches in shaded woodland means they're disappearing wherever ancient mixed forests are being replaced with dense plantations or cleared entirely. Their presence in a woodland is proof that the ecosystem still breathes the way it did 500 years ago.
