Bent-Lined Carpet

Fascinating facts about the Bent-Lined Carpet

• It flies year-round in Texas every season, unlike most of its range where adults vanish in winter. Adults can be seen on wing any month, from scorching July heat to cool January nights. This constant presence shows how the moth exploits Texas' mild climate to produce multiple generations without pause, highlighting climate's role in insect life cycles.
• Northern adults appear as early March in the eastern U.S., then stay active through October in Ontario, extending the flight period to eight months. This long season supports two or more generations per year, boosting population growth. The extended activity window reveals how flexible timing helps the species thrive across varied climates.
• The traveller moth, Costaconvexa centrostrigaria, originally inhabits most of North America but avoids the Arctic region. It has been introduced and now occurs in Great Britain, the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira.
• In the warm climates of Texas and the western United States the traveller moth can be seen flying throughout the entire year, never pausing its activity cycle. In contrast, populations farther north have a more limited season, with adults on the wing from May to October in Ontario and from March to November across north-eastern North America.
• The bent-line carpet moth can produce two or more generations per year.
