• Adult dusky marbled brown moths are on the wing from early spring through late summer, with flight activity recorded between April and August. In many parts of its range the species produces two distinct generations within this period.
• The caterpillars of Gluphisia crenata feed on a range of tree species, preferring several poplars such as black poplar, balsam poplar and aspen, and they also consume purple willow. These host plants provide the nutrients required for larval growth and development. • The dusky marbled brown inhabits a broad Palearctic belt that begins in Europe and extends eastward through parts of Russia and China to the Japanese islands. Within China the species is represented by subspecies such as G. tristis in Sichuan and G. meridionalis in Yunnan, underscoring its wide eastern distribution.
• In North America the same moth is recorded under the name Gluphisia septentrionis, a designation that was once applied to a separate species. This reflects the continent's recognised population of the taxon.
