• The Eurasian bee beetle is covered in yellow-orange or white hairs on the sides of its chest and abdomen, giving it a striking bumblebee-like appearance. This colour pattern, together with a black head and pronotum and orange-tinged elytra, creates a convincing mimicry of a stinging insect. Predators that avoid bumblebees are therefore less likely to attack, granting the beetle better protection while it moves among flowers.
• The beetle prefers sunny clearings high in mountainous forests, where it is most often encountered on forest meadows and edges. It is rarely seen in lowland woodlands, limiting its presence to upland habitats across most of Europe and the eastern Palearctic realm. This preference for elevated, flower-rich sites concentrates its populations on the edges of mountain meadows and forest clearings.
• Males can be identified by the first segment of the tarsus, which clearly protrudes beyond the end tooth and is bulbously thickened on the outside. In contrast, the male's digging teeth are weaker than those of the female, highlighting the tarsal feature as the most obvious sexual difference. This outward-bulging tarsus allows researchers to reliably separate males from females during field surveys.
• The first tarsus is small and protrudes only slightly from the tip of the terminal tooth. In females the outer teeth of the front legs are strong, a typical adaptation for digging. The pygidium is distinctly indented rather than rounded, further differentiating the sex. These features together identify the female's digging leg morphology.
• Adults are active from May through July, when they visit flowers to collect pollen. They feed on a range of plants including members of the Apiaceae and Rosaceae families, as well as thyme, thistles and blackberry. This pollen diet supplies the energy needed for reproduction during the brief summer period. After the adult stage, the larvae develop in dead wood and other organic parts of deciduous trees.
