Fascinating facts about the Kob

• Male kobs stake out territories the size of a football field on the savanna and defend them with their lives — but only during mating season. Each male holds his patch for just 2–3 months before surrendering it to the next challenger. These arenas, called leks, pack dozens of males into a single square kilometre, creating one of Africa's most intense real estate markets. The best-positioned males at the centre of the lek mate with most of the females; edge males often mate with none.
• A kob's horns curve backward in an elegant lyre shape and can snap off mid-fight, leaving a male permanently disfigured but alive to try again next season. During territorial battles, two males lock horns and twist violently for minutes, testing spine, neck strength, and will. The horns themselves are made of keratin — the same material as human fingernails — and are shed and regrown yearly, meaning every male gets a fresh set to fight with.
• Kobs can leap 3 metres horizontally in a single bound and reach speeds of 80 kilometres per hour when a lion or wild dog gives chase. But their most ingenious escape is the 'pronking' jump — an explosive vertical leap where all four hooves leave the ground at once, turning the kob into a bouncing target too erratic for a predator to track. This costs enormous energy and signals to predators: I'm fit, I'm alert, hunting me is not worth it.
• Female kobs give birth to a single calf after a 7.5-month pregnancy and hide it in the grass for the first weeks of life, visiting only to nurse. The calf stays motionless and scentless during the day, invisible to hyenas and eagles. At just 3–4 weeks old, the calf can outrun most of its predators and joins its mother in the herd, gaining safety in numbers — herds of 2,000 kobs moving together turn any lone hunter into the hunted.
• The Nile lechwe, a close cousin of the kob, once migrated across South Sudan in herds of millions, but today fewer than 30,000 remain due to wetland drainage and civil conflict. Kobs themselves, though still common in protected areas like Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park, depend entirely on vast uninterrupted grasslands. A single national park can hold 15,000 kobs — but lose that park to agriculture or poaching, and the population collapses within years.
