• A jackal can eat a third of its own body weight in a single meal — up to 5 kg of meat — then go weeks without food. This feast-or-famine cycle means their stomach stretches like elastic, and their digestive system kicks into overdrive, extracting maximum calories before the next drought hits. In the savanna, feast days are survival.
• Jackals hunt using a strategy called 'shadowing': they follow larger predators like lions and leopards, waiting for the kill, then dive in to snatch chunks of meat while the big cat is distracted. A single jackal can pilfer 2–3 kg from a fresh carcass in under 60 seconds. They're not scavengers — they're savanna pickpockets.
• A jackal's howl carries for up to 9 kilometres across open savanna.
