Fascinating facts about the Pangolin

• A pangolin's tongue is longer than its body — in some species, it stretches 40 centimetres and coils inside the ribcage like a biological whip. When it plunges into a termite mound, the sticky saliva (produced by enlarged salivary glands) traps insects at a rate of 20,000 per day. The tongue has no bones, no attachment at the throat, and retracts by anchoring to the breastbone — a design so specialised that pangolins can barely chew, swallowing every ant whole.
• Pangolins wear armour made of keratin — the same protein in human fingernails — layered into overlapping scales that cover 80% of the body. These scales are tougher than bone, flexible enough to curl into an impenetrable ball, and so efficient at protecting against predators that a hungry lion will often give up within seconds. A single pangolin carries roughly 1,000 scales weighing up to 20% of its total body weight.
• The most trafficked mammal on Earth is not the elephant or rhino — it's the pangolin. Over the past decade, poachers have killed an estimated 1 million pangolins, most smuggled to Asia for scales (ground into traditional medicine) and meat. A single seizure in 2019 contained 10 tonnes of scales from roughly 14,000 dead animals, yet pangolins remain almost invisible in conservation headlines compared to charismatic megafauna.
• Pangolins have no teeth and no stomach acid — their entire digestive system is built around mechanical breakdown. After swallowing ants whole, they grind them in a muscular gizzard lined with sand and pebbles the pangolin deliberately swallows to aid digestion. This means a pangolin defecates up to 16 times per day, each meal moving through the gut in under 5 hours.
• Eight pangolin species exist, four in Africa and four in Asia, yet they are the only mammals on Earth whose entire skeleton lacks a collarbone. This missing bone, found in almost every other mammal, frees up their shoulder joints for explosive digging — a single pangolin can excavate a burrow 3 metres deep in one night. Despite their ancient lineage (fossil pangolins appear 60 million years ago), they've never evolved the obvious defences other burrowers use: they dig fast and hide in their own tunnels instead.
