• Only two females remain alive on Earth — and neither can reproduce naturally. The northern white rhino was hunted from roughly 2,000 animals in 1960 to extinction in the wild by 2018, a collapse triggered almost entirely by poaching for horn. The last male, Sudan, died in 2018 at a Kenya sanctuary. What survives now is genetic material in a freezer and the knowledge that we watched an entire subspecies vanish within a single human lifetime.
• Its horn is keratin — the same protein in human fingernails — yet poachers slaughtered thousands for it. A single horn weighs up to 2.3 kg and sold for $65,000 on the black market in the 2010s, more per gram than gold or cocaine. The irony: horn has zero medicinal value. Traditional medicine markets valued it anyway, transforming biology into demand and demand into extinction.
• A northern white rhino calf nurses for 2–3 years, the longest dependency of any African hoofed mammal. Mothers are intensely protective, standing guard over their young in the open savanna where predators roam freely. This slow reproduction — typically one calf every 2.5 to 5 years — meant the species could never outpace poaching pressure once it began.
• The 'white' in its name has nothing to do with colour. Early European settlers misheard the Dutch word 'wijd' (wide) as 'white', confusing it with the southern white rhino, which shares the same wide, squared-off lips. This linguistic accident stuck for over 150 years, a reminder that even what we call an animal can be built on error.
• Scientists are attempting to resurrect the subspecies using induced pluripotent stem cells from preserved northern white rhino tissue and DNA from the southern white rhino as a surrogate mother. Success would mean bringing back a lineage extinct for a generation — but also raising questions no zoo has ever answered: Where would it live? Who would protect it from the poaching that destroyed the first population?
