• A jungle palm squirrel can rotate its hind feet 180 degrees — meaning it can run headfirst down a tree trunk and suddenly reverse direction without turning its body. This ankle flexibility, called pronation, lets them cling to vertical palms and switch between up and down on the same branch in milliseconds. Most tree-climbers need their whole body to pivot; jungle palm squirrels just flip their feet.
• Three bold white stripes run the length of their spine like racing stripes on a sports car, earning them the nickname 'three-striped palm squirrel' across Southeast Asia. These stripes aren't camouflage — they're a beacon. In the dappled light of rainforest canopies where shadows and sunlight trade places every few centimetres, those stripes let mothers spot their young and let rival males know to stay clear of a territory without a chase.
• They spend 80% of their waking hours in the upper canopy, rarely touching ground, which means they've never drunk water in the way most mammals do. Instead, they extract moisture from the ripe fruits and tender shoots they eat — a date palm fruit, a strangler fig, fresh leaf buds. • A jungle palm squirrel's tail is longer than its entire body and works as a counterbalance beam, allowing them to leap up to 2 metres across open air between palm crowns without touching the trunk.
