- Genetic analysis has revealed that the common tapeti possesses two distinct chromosome sets: one population carries 36 chromosomes with a fundamental number of 68, while another carries 40 chromosomes with a fundamental number of 76. These differing karyotypes have been documented in separate studies, indicating notable genetic variation within the species.
- The tapeti carries the myxoma virus without apparent harm, acting as a natural reservoir for the pathogen. This relationship was discovered by a Brazilian physician in the 1940s and the virus causes only a benign cutaneous fibroma in its tapeti hosts. In contrast, the same virus is lethal to European rabbits, producing myxomatosis. The tapeti therefore helps maintain the virus in wild ecosystems while remaining unharmed.
- In the wild the tapeti has been observed feeding on the bolete mushroom Harrya chromapes.
