Indian Globular Frog

Fascinating facts about the Indian Globular Frog

• Adults reach 76 mm from snout to vent, with males at 65 mm and females stretching to 85 mm. Its compact build lets it push through soil with short, sturdy hind legs.
• Males develop a bright yellow throat speckled with black, a visual cue that signals readiness to mate.
• Unlike many amphibians that cling to forest floors, this species digs deep into scrub forests and even cultivated fields, thriving up to 1,200 m above sea level. Its fossorial lifestyle lets it escape predators and extreme surface temperatures by burrowing into moist soil. This altitude range shows its adaptability across diverse South Asian landscapes.
• Its tadpoles wear a brown back and a whitish tail marked with darker stripes, and dark spots on the flanks and belly.
• Protected areas like Vansda National Park and Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve serve as safe havens for this frog, yet roads and farm runoff still pose serious risks. Roadkill incidents and agricultural pollution can decimate local populations despite the IUCN’s “least concern” status. These threats highlight how even common species depend on mindful land-use practices to persist.
