Fascinating facts about the Mertens' Leaf Frog

At elevations as high as 1,000 meters, this frog still thrives, showing how flexible it is across Brazil's hills and valleys.
It lives in everything from pristine rainforest to urban gardens, proving that a single species can bridge wild and human-made worlds.
With a mouth bigger than that of tiny tree frogs like Dendropsophus branneri, it can swallow prey such as spiders and moth larvae that would overwhelm its smaller cousins.
From December through March the frogs gather to mate, yet they have been spotted breeding outside that window, hinting that they can adjust their reproductive calendar when conditions change.
Eggs are tucked into leaf nests that float on water, then drop into the stream below, a clever strategy that keeps the young safe from many predators.
