Showy Leopard Frog

Fascinating facts about the Showy Leopard Frog

• Even though it lives only in Mexico, this frog thrives in three settings: mist-covered mountain forests, calm freshwater lakes, and human-made water storage sites.
• Scientists placed this frog in the Ranidae family after detailed biochemical studies in the 1980s, linking it to the larger Rana pipiens complex. Those early DNA analyses reshaped how herpetologists view frog evolution across North America. Understanding its lineage helps conservationists pinpoint which habitats matter most for related species.
• The biggest threat to this amphibian isn’t a predator, it’s the loss of its home. Deforestation and land conversion are shrinking the moist montane forests it depends on, putting the entire species at risk. Recognizing habitat loss as the main danger highlights the urgent need to protect Mexico’s forested valleys.
