Hardwicke's Woolly Bat

Fascinating facts about the Hardwicke's Woolly Bat

• This bat lives from about 100 m up to 2,500 m above sea level and is found from the Himalayas to Singapore.
• A forearm that measures just 31–36 mm (about 1.2–1.4 in) and ears only 11–15 mm long let the bat slip through dense understory, a design that makes it one of the most maneuverable flyers in its forest homes.
• In the peat swamps of Borneo, the bat hangs above the slick fluid of Nepenthes hemsleyana pitchers, and the plant gains roughly 34 % of its leaf nitrogen from the bat’s droppings, a tiny partnership that fuels the plant’s growth.
• Despite being spotted roosting in caves, rooftops, bamboo thickets, and even rattan-leaf shelters, the species’ population remains stable, a rarity for many forest mammals facing habitat change.
• Listed as least concern since the IUCN assessments of 1996 and 2008, the bat has a wide geographic spread and tolerates altered habitats.
