Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo

Fascinating facts about the Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo

• Males tip the scales at about 7.2 kg (16 lb) and females at 5.9 kg (13 lb), making this the smallest tree-kangaroo. Their bodies stretch 480-650 mm (19-26 in) while the tail adds another 600-740 mm (24-29 in). In another study males averaged 8.6 kg and females 7.1 kg, confirming a modest size range across populations.
• Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo occupies roughly 5,500 sq km of northeast Queensland, from the Daintree River down to the Cardwell Range, mostly on the Atherton Tablelands. It lives between 600 and 1,200 m (1,969-3,937 ft) elevation, favoring basalt-rich rainforest where densities are twice those on acidic soils. Even tiny forest patches as small as 20 ha can be inhabited, showing the species' flexibility.
• Male Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos patrol home ranges of about 4 ha, overlapping with other males and nearby females, while females keep tighter 2 ha territories that do not overlap with other females. This spatial layout reduces direct competition among females but allows males to roam widely in search of mates. The limited size of each range reflects the scarcity of high-quality food patches they need each day. Understanding these range sizes guides the placement of protected canopy corridors that link enough 2-ha patches to sustain a breeding population.
• These kangaroos are leaf-eaters that sample at least 37 plant species, from adult foliage to young shoots and flowers. Remarkably, they also munch on toxic plants like Lantana camara, the stinging Dendrocnide photinophylla, and wild tobacco (Solanum mauritianum), showing a tolerance many mammals lack. They never drink water, extracting moisture directly from the leaves they chew.
• Reproduction runs year-round: gestation lasts 42-48 days (average 44.8 days) and females give birth to a single joey every 1.4 years. Young stay in the pouch for about a year, peek out at ~250 days, and leave permanently around 300 days, remaining with their mother up to 650 days. Females reach sexual maturity at ~2.04 years, males much later at ~4.6 years.

About the Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo

In the misty, mystical forests of northern Australia, Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo embarks on a serene and deliberate dance, its padded paws barely whispering against the moss-covered branches as it navigates its arboreal realm with effortless agility. With a gentle, inquiring gaze, this enigmatic creature surveys its surroundings, its large, round eyes drinking in the dappled light that filters through the canopy above, as it searches for the tender shoots and leaves that sustain it. As it moves, its soft, woolly fur blends seamlessly into the shadows, rendering it all but invisible, a phantom of the forest, elusive and enchanting.
