• A possum the size of a guinea pig has hands that work like a primate's — four fingers on each hand, plus an opposable thumb that lets it grip branches the way a monkey does. Herbert River ring-tailed possums are one of only two possum species worldwide with true opposable thumbs, a trait they share with our closest relatives. They use this grip to stay locked to thin vines while eating, leaving both hind legs free to anchor them if they slip.
• Its tail is ringed like a raccoon's but does something raccoon tails cannot: it curls into a tight spiral when the possum rests, forming a cushion beneath its body like a living pillow. This prehensile tail can support the entire animal's weight, so it acts as a third limb when climbing through rainforest canopy 15 metres above ground. For a creature that weighs just 1.2 kilograms, this adaptation means it never has to leave a feeding branch to find a safe sleeping spot.
• Unlike most possums that digest fruit and leaves in a simple stomach, Herbert River ring-tailed possums have a chambered foregut that ferments leaves like a cow's rumen does — a digestive system so specialised it's only found in a handful of possum species. This lets them extract nutrition from toxic or low-quality leaves that would starve any other small mammal. They're eating from a menu most animals cannot read.
• These possums are almost entirely nocturnal but don't venture far — a single individual might spend its entire adult life in a home range smaller than two football fields. They know every branch, every fruiting cycle, every shelter in their pocket of rainforest, and rarely stray beyond it even when food becomes scarce. This extreme site fidelity makes them vulnerable: if their small patch of Queensland tropical rainforest is logged or cleared, they have no instinct to relocate.
• The species was named for the Herbert River in far north Queensland in 1896, but by the 1980s scientists couldn't find one anywhere. They were presumed extinct for nearly two decades until a living population was rediscovered in 1985, hiding in a rainforest fragment near Cairns that had shrunk to just 60 square kilometres. That single rediscovery revealed how little we understood about Australian possums — and how a creature can vanish from science, then reappear in the exact place it never truly left.
