Fascinating facts about the Green Lizard

• At just 15 cm from snout to cloaca, the European green lizard can stretch to a total length of 40 cm when its tail is fully extended, the tail itself can be twice as long as the body. When a predator grabs it, the lizard can drop that long tail and later grow a replacement, a trick that lets it escape danger while keeping most of its body intact.
• In spring a female European green lizard lays between six and twenty eggs, which hatch after two to four months. The newborns emerge pale brown and measure only 3 to 4 cm from snout to vent. By the following year they have doubled in size, reaching adult dimensions and becoming capable of reproducing themselves.
• The species thrives up to 2,200 m (7,218 ft), occupying dense bushy vegetation in open woodland, hedgerows, field margins, embankments and bramble thickets. Its range stretches across southeastern Europe, from southern Germany and Austria through the Balkans to western Turkey, covering a mosaic of habitats that provide both sunlit basking spots and shelter.
• The IUCN classifies the European green lizard as "Least Concern" because it occupies a broad range and remains common in many areas. Its adaptability means no major threats have been identified across most of its habitat, though pesticide use in Turkey could pose localized risks.
• A wide suite of predators keeps the European green lizard on constant alert: red foxes, badgers, domestic cats, buzzards, kestrels, crows and adders hunt it. To survive, the lizard relies on the previously mentioned tail-autotomy.
