• At nearly a meter long, the frilled lizard can stretch to 90 cm (35 in) from head to tail tip and tip the scales at about 600 g (1.3 lb). Males outsize females, boasting a larger head, jaws and frill, while the frill itself can fan out to a 30 cm (12 in) diameter, four times the torso's length. This massive, mobile cape makes the animal look like a living shield, deterring predators and signaling dominance.
• Genetic studies show the frilled lizard split from its nearest relatives about 10 million years ago, and three distinct lineages now occupy northern Australia and New Guinea, separated by the Ord River and the Carpentarian Gap. One lineage even crossed into southern New Guinea roughly 17,000 years ago when a land bridge formed during a glacial low-sea-level stand. These shallow allopatric clades.
• A true tree-dweller, the frilled lizard spends over 90 % of its day perched on trunks and branches, only descending to hunt or move. When it does sprint, it can run on its hind legs, leaning its head back so the neck aligns with the tail base for balance. • Reproduction is timed to the rains: breeding starts in the late dry season and peaks in the early wet months. Females lay clutches ranging from four to over 20 eggs, which incubate for two to four months. Warmer nests skew hatchlings toward females, while milder temperatures favor males, showing how temperature directly shapes the next generation's sex ratio.
