Double-banded Coral-snake

Fascinating facts about the Double-banded Coral-snake

• From the rain-soaked forests of northeastern Argentina to the grasslands of Uruguay, this snake threads a range that spans four South-American countries, proving that even a modest-sized reptile can thrive across diverse political borders.
• It slips through leaf litter at sea level up to 400 m (1,300 ft) altitude, showing how a forest-loving hunter can also make a home in savanna and grassland patches when the understory offers enough cover.
• While most people picture snakes swallowing rodents, this species turns the tables by feeding on other snakes and limbless amphisbaenians, highlighting a hidden predator-prey chain beneath the forest floor.
• Each female lays eggs rather than giving birth live, a reminder that even venomous elapids retain the ancient reptilian strategy of egg-making in the modern world.
• Laboratory milking yielded an average of 8–10 mg of venom per specimen, yet just 5–7 mg can be lethal to an adult human, underscoring how a few milligrams of this toxin can tip the balance between life and death.
