Fascinating facts about the Western Ratsnake
- Western rat snakes can grow longer than a school bus. They typically measure 106.7-183 cm (42-72 in.) but the longest recorded individual reached 218.4 cm (86 in.). Adult males span 108-154 cm while females are 96-120 cm, weighing up to 1 kg. Their size makes them among the longest snakes in North America, giving them the reach to hunt birds in tree hollows and to overpower sizable predators.
- Their range stretches farther west than the Mississippi, from southern Iowa down through Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana, across Texas and up into Oklahoma, Kansas and southeastern Nebraska. Within this belt they occupy rocky hillsides, canyons, scrub fields, prairie farms, deciduous forests, swamps and even abandoned houses. Such habitat flexibility lets them survive in both pristine woodlands and human-altered landscapes.
- Mating season kicks off in late May, with pairs entwining for minutes to hours. About five weeks later females lay 12-20 eggs, each 36-60 mm long and 20-26.5 mm wide. Incubation lasts 65-70 days, and hatchlings emerge 28-41 cm long, weighing roughly 12-14 g. On average a clutch contains 15 eggs, but can range from 4 to 44.
- When threatened, they may freeze, kink their bodies and then either bolt or vibrate their tails. The tail-vibration creates a rattling sound, a defense shared with rattlesnakes but not a mimicry, and they can also release a foul-smelling musk from their anal glands. These layered defenses let them deter predators such as hawks and mammals.
- A growing fungal outbreak, Snake Fungal Disease, now reaches nine U.S. states and includes the western rat snake complex among its victims. Infected snakes show scabbed, crusted scales and cloudy eyes, symptoms. Researchers link human movement of wildlife and habitat change to the spread.
