- The greater false vampire bat feeds on a wide range of animal prey, including other bats, small birds, reptiles, fish and large insects, which makes it highly carnivorous. It does not hunt in the air like many insectivorous bats but instead works as a gleaning predator, picking up victims from the ground and even from water surfaces. This foraging style lets it exploit habitats from forest floors to shallow streams, expanding its food options beyond aerial insects.
- When hunting, the bat can rely on vision and passive listening rather than sonar, and it has been seen catching prey in total darkness without emitting any echolocation calls. Although it normally uses echolocation, observations show it can capture food without sonar, demonstrating flexibility in sensory use. This ability allows it to feed in environments where echo-based hunting might be less effective, such as cluttered or pitch-black areas.
- During its nightly forays, about 85% of the bat's prey is seized in short, low-level flights just half a metre above the ground. These brief searching sweeps dominate its hunting strategy, while it also occasionally perches two metres high to wait for unsuspecting victims. By staying close to the substrate, the bat can quickly snatch insects, small vertebrates and even other bats that move near the ground, maximising capture success.
- Female greater false vampire bats transport their tiniest pups while out foraging, but abandon the larger offspring in the roost until they are more developed. The young remain in the colony to be nursed for two to three months before becoming independent. This division of care allows mothers to continue hunting while still protecting vulnerable infants. Such a strategy supports pup survival in the bat's diverse Asian habitats.
