- The red forest duiker can clear a net that stands 1.3 metres tall in a single bound, a feat described as extraordinary for an ungulate. This powerful leap is used when a predator is spotted; the animal first freezes then launches itself into the surrounding thicket. Its ability to jump so high lets it quickly reach dense undergrowth that offers protection.
- To defend its territory, the red forest duiker secretes a scented fluid from glands near its eyes and rubs its face against grass, twigs, bark or other surfaces, leaving an odour that marks the limits of its range. Both males and females use this method to signal ownership to neighbours and potential intruders.
