• Indochinese ground squirrels are among the few rodents that follow a strict seasonal rhythm—they enter torpor (a state of reduced metabolism) during the dry season, dropping their body temperature by 10°C and slowing their heart rate to conserve energy when food becomes scarce. This hibernation-lite strategy lets them survive months when fruit production plummets in their tropical dry forest home, something most tropical rodents never evolved to do.
• Their cheek pouches can stretch to hold food equal to their own body weight—a 300-gram squirrel stuffing 300 grams of seeds and insects into its face. They make dozens of trips per day to hidden cache sites scattered across their territory, sometimes burying food in separate locations to reduce the risk that a single stolen cache destroys their winter stores.
