• Only one lemur on Earth will eat bamboo — and it's so picky it ignores 99% of the plant. The greater bamboo lemur feeds almost exclusively on the shoots of just two bamboo species in southeastern Madagascar, and only during the three months when those shoots are tender enough to eat. For the other nine months, it survives on leaves and stems, essentially fasting until the next shoot season arrives. This extreme dependence means a single drought that delays bamboo growth can trigger starvation across an entire population.
• At 2.5 kilograms, this lemur is small enough to fit in your hands — yet it produces one of the loudest calls in the primate world. Its piercing, bird-like shriek can carry across a kilometre of rainforest, a volume scientists believe evolved because its preferred bamboo thickets muffle sound so effectively. The call is so distinctive that researchers can census populations by sound alone, making the lemur one of the easiest primates to study from a distance.
• Fewer than 100 greater bamboo lemurs remain in the wild, confined to just three isolated forest fragments in Madagascar. In 1986, scientists thought the species was extinct — it hadn't been seen since 1876. Then a single population was rediscovered in a national park, and decades later a second group was found 100 kilometres away. This resurrection from presumed extinction shows both how fragile these populations are and how much uncharted wilderness still hides in Madagascar's rainforests.
• It raises its babies in the densest nurseries of any lemur species — mother and infant spend their first weeks hidden inside a single bamboo culm (stem), emerging only at night. This strategy protects newborns from predators and the forest floor's humidity, though it works only because bamboo shoots are so abundant during breeding season. If bamboo fails, so do the babies.
• The greater bamboo lemur's skeleton is built for vertical climbing in ways that defy its small size — its limbs are powerfully muscled and its spine has evolved extra flexibility to contort through the dense, springy architecture of bamboo canes. This anatomical specialisation makes it perfectly shaped for life in bamboo, but utterly dependent on it; no other food source can support its metabolism. It is perhaps the most specialised lemur alive — a creature so finely tuned to one plant that its survival is indistinguishable from the survival of Madagascan bamboo forests.
