• Azara's agoutis bury thousands of seeds every year—but forget where most of them are. A single agouti may cache 3,000+ seeds across its territory, then recover only a fraction before they sprout. The rest become trees. Ecologists now suspect agoutis are keystone seed dispersers that literally shape rainforest composition across South America, turning a rodent into a forest architect.
• They punch their hind legs into the ground with enough force to create audible thuds that carry 20 metres through the forest. This isn't random fidgeting—it's a warning system. When one agouti detects danger, it stamps and alerts the whole neighbourhood. The rhythm and intensity communicate how serious the threat is, giving nearby animals time to vanish into the canopy.
• An agouti's teeth never stop growing. To keep them sharp and short enough to gnaw through Brazil nut shells—one of the hardest seeds in the rainforest—they wear their incisors against each other constantly. Wear down the teeth too much and they starve. Stop grinding them and they curl into their skull. Their bite force at 7,200 PSI rivals a hyena's, packed into a 1–3 kg body.
• Agoutis mate for life and stay with the same partner across 10+ years. They're monogamous in a rainforest where most mammals are solitary, and the pair jointly defends a home range of 2–5 hectares. If a partner vanishes, the survivor may stop eating. In captivity, separated pairs have died of what researchers describe simply as grief.
• They give birth to precocial young—babies born furred, with eyes open, able to follow their mother after 24 hours. For rodents of their size, this is rare and metabolically expensive. But it means a baby agouti can flee predators within a day, not weeks. It's an evolutionary bet: pour resources into fewer, tougher offspring instead of throwing dozens of helpless pups at survival.
