• A single giant green anemone can live for 80 years — longer than most humans — attached to the same rock in a tidal zone, never moving more than a few centimetres in its entire life. Some individuals have occupied the same square of stone since before your grandparents were born, their only journey the twice-daily flood and drain of the Pacific tide.
• Their green colour isn't from pigment. Inside each tentacle live thousands of symbiotic algae cells that photosynthesize, feeding the anemone sugar in exchange for shelter and nitrogen waste. They're part animal, part plant — a living fusion that turns sunlight into energy while hunting fish with stinging cells at night.
• An anemone's stomach is also its brain. With no central nervous system, they taste, touch, and decide to eat using sensors scattered across their body — a nervous system so distributed that if you cut one in half, each piece regenerates into a complete animal within weeks, each half now a separate individual.
• They wage chemical warfare against neighbours. Giant green anemones release toxins that kill competing anemones up to 30 centimetres away, creating bare zones around themselves. In the crowded intertidal, this invisible boundary is often the only space they claim besides their rock.
• When the tide drains and exposes them to air, they collapse into a tight ball and seal themselves with mucus — transforming from a flower-like hunter into a protection pod. This daily survival trick repeats thousands of times across a 80-year lifetime, each tide a test they've learned to pass since they were juveniles smaller than a grain of rice.
