Fascinating facts about the Galápagos Fur Seal

• The smallest fur seal on Earth weighs less than a large dog — adults max out at 64 kilograms, yet they hunt in waters so cold that most mammals would die of hypothermia in under an hour. Their fur is twice as dense as a sea otter's, with up to 20,000 hairs per square centimetre, creating an insulating layer so effective they never need to haul out and warm up on land like other seals do.
• In 1985, only 100 Galápagos fur seals survived. Fur hunters and El Niño had pushed them to the brink of extinction. Today roughly 5,000 remain — a recovery so fragile that a single bad ocean year can still erase a decade of gains, and they exist only on six islands in the entire world.
• A pup is born on volcanic rock after a 7.5-month pregnancy, then the mother vanishes for days at a time, leaving it alone to memorise her specific bark among hundreds of identical seals. When she returns, she finds her own pup in a crowd by sound alone — a recognition system so precise she ignores all others, even if they starve nearby.
• Unlike most pinnipeds that dive straight down, Galápagos fur seals hunt in surface waters where moonlight fades into absolute black. They hunt squid using whiskers so sensitive they detect vibrations smaller than a human hair, and they can feel prey moving at frequencies lower than the rumble of distant thunder.
• At night they climb rocks 200 metres above sea level — higher than a 20-storey building — to sleep on bare stone, then return to the ocean at dawn. This behaviour is found nowhere else in the seal world and wastes enormous energy, yet every population does it, suggesting it once protected them from something they've forgotten but their bodies haven't.
