• A single European green crab can eat 40 clams in a day—enough to devastate a mussel bed the size of a football field in weeks. They pry open shells with claws that generate crushing force equivalent to 300 pounds per square inch, then suck out the soft tissue. In Tasmania and California, they've wiped out commercial shellfish beds that took decades to establish, turning them into barren sand in under five years.
• This crab arrived in North America by accident around 1817, possibly in ship ballast water from Europe, and has since invaded every major coastline on the continent. Today there are millions where there were none two centuries ago. A single breeding female produces 185,000 larvae per season, and with no natural predators and abundant food, the population doubles in ideal conditions—making it one of the 100 worst invasive species on Earth.
• The European green crab can survive in water saltier than the ocean itself, fresher than a river, and colder than most crabs can tolerate—a biological flexibility that lets it colonise places native crabs cannot. It holds its breath for up to 36 hours and can walk across dry land for days hunting for food. This adaptability is why eradication has failed everywhere it's tried.
• Male green crabs fight with ritualized boxing matches: they face off, raise their claws, and strike at each other's shells in a precise choreography that determines dominance without lethal injury. The winner claims territory and mates. These contests are so consistent that researchers can predict the outcome by measuring claw size alone—a winner's claw is typically 2–3 millimetres wider than a loser's.
• In its native European range, the green crab has predators: eels, octopuses, and seabirds keep populations in check. But in North America, juvenile crabs face almost no natural enemies, letting them reach adulthood at rates 40 times higher than in the Atlantic. A handful of stoats introduced to an island in Maine are now the only successful biological control, eating crabs faster than the crabs can breed—proof that invasion success hinges entirely on who shows up to dinner.
