Fascinating facts about the Gelada

• Geladas spend most of their day munching grass, up to 90% of what they eat are grass blades, making them the only primates that are true grazers. Their tiny incisors and sturdy fingers let them pull individual blades, and they chew with the same efficiency as a zebra. This specialization lets them thrive on the high-altitude Ethiopian plateaus.
• A gelada band can hold up to 27 reproductive units, each with up to 12 females, their young and one to four males, plus several all-male groups of 2-15 males. These units nest inside a larger band, and up to four bands form a community that may overlap home ranges. Such a multilevel society, described as "complex," lets individuals maintain close kin bonds while still benefiting from the safety of a massive herd that can number dozens of units.
• Male geladas sport a bright red, hourglass-shaped skin patch on their chest, surrounded by white hair, while females show a much subtler patch that flashes a "necklace" of fluid-filled blisters during estrus. This vivid display replaces the typical baboon rump display that is hidden by their shuffle gait.
• Field studies revealed that non-dominant male geladas can secretly mate with females while both suppress their usual mating calls, effectively "cheating" without alerting the dominant male. If the dominant male discovers the betrayal, he attacks the culprits, providing the first wild evidence that deceit and punishment are not uniquely human traits, and suggesting deep evolutionary roots for social cheating.
• Gelada numbers have slumped from an estimated 440,000 individuals in the 1970s to about 200,000 by 2008. Despite this loss, the IUCN still lists the species as Least Concern.
