• A gelada's face is a bleeding billboard. Patches of bare skin on the chest and face flush bright red when females ovulate, advertising fertility to males across the grassland. During breeding season, the skin becomes a deeper crimson—visible from 100 metres away. Scientists call it 'sexual skin', and it works because geladas live in open habitats with nowhere to hide; honesty about reproductive status evolved as the most reliable way to attract a mate.
• Geladas are the only primates on Earth that eat almost exclusively grass—about 90% of their diet comes from grazing, not fruits or insects. They spend 5 to 7 hours a day with their heads down, picking grass seeds and shoots with a precision grip that human hands envy. This herbivore lifestyle means they live at altitudes between 1,800 and 4,300 metres where few other primates can survive: thin air, freezing nights, and only grass.
• A male gelada's mane isn't just for show—it signals his stress levels in real time. When a male is calm and dominant, his mane lies flat and glossy. Under threat or anxiety, it flares up and bristles, making him look twice as wide. The mane darkens with age too, turning from blonde to mahogany, so rivals can read a male's age and status from 50 metres away without a fight.
• Geladas live in groups of up to 600 individuals split into smaller units with their own hierarchy and drama. A single male often controls a harem of 15 to 50 females; when another male challenges him, the winner takes the entire group. Females stay with their bands for life, building alliances with other females that help them resist takeovers—and some coalitions have successfully kept the same male in power for over a decade.
• The gelada's closest relative died 3.5 million years ago. Theropithecus was once a genus with at least five species spread across Africa; today only geladas remain, clinging to the Ethiopian Highlands. Climate change dried out Africa's grasslands, and one by one their cousins vanished. The gelada survived by retreating higher and higher into the mountains—a evolutionary narrowing so drastic that the whole genus now exists only in Ethiopia.
