• A single American bison heart weighs 12 kilograms — heavier than a bowling ball — and can pump 40 litres of blood per minute at a gallop. Their cardiovascular system is built for explosive acceleration across open prairie, capable of hitting 55 km/h despite weighing up to 900 kilograms. This power-to-weight ratio rivals any sprinter in the animal kingdom.
• Bison survived the last Ice Age by following a migration corridor down the centre of North America, moving thousands of kilometres seasonally to track fresh grass as the climate shifted. Their skeletal remains map this ancient highway across the continent — a 10,000-year-old GPS written in bones. When European settlers arrived, bison herds numbered roughly 30 million; hunting reduced them to fewer than 1,000 by 1890.
• A bison's hump isn't fat — it's an engineering system of reinforced vertebrae, thick muscle, and ligaments that can support a snow load of 180 kilograms on its shoulders. In winter, they use this structure to forge through drifts up to a metre deep, shovelling snow sideways with their massive head to expose grass underneath.
