• An electric eel generates 860 volts — enough to stun a horse wading through the river. Inside its body are three electric organs stacked like biological batteries, packed with 5,000 to 8,000 specialised cells called electrocytes. Each cell fires in microsecond precision, all in sync, to produce a shock that lasts less than 2 milliseconds. It can fire 400 times per hour without exhausting itself, making it the only vertebrate that hunts and navigates using electricity as both weapon and sense.
• In murky Amazon rivers where visibility drops to a few centimetres, the electric eel 'sees' by sending out weak electric pulses 1,600 times per second — a living radar that maps prey location, size, and even muscle contractions. It reads the electrical signature of a hidden fish's heartbeat and gill movements before the fish knows it's being hunted.
