Fascinating facts about the Electric Eel
- Each electrocyte in the eel's Sachs organ spits out 0.15 V, and thousands of them stack like a battery to reach almost 10 V at a rhythm of about 25 Hz. This low-voltage signal acts as the eel's sonar, painting a picture of its dark, muddy world and allowing it to locate prey and mates without relying on its poor eyesight.
- When hunting or defending, the eel can unleash a high-voltage blast of up to 480 V, the weakest of its three cousins but still enough to stun almost any animal. By curling its body and touching two points, it concentrates the discharge, turning a single strike into a powerful electric net that immobilizes prey and deters predators.
- A juvenile eel, only a few centimeters long, can still deliver a shocking 40-50 mA current in a leap, producing about 3.9 W of power; scaling up, a full-grown adult could dump roughly 63 W onto a predator, almost ten times the power of a police taser. By leaping out of the water, the eel bypasses the dampening effect of water, delivering a direct, painful jolt.
- During the dry season a male builds a saliva-glued nest where a female deposits; field studies report an average of 1,200 hatchlings and occasional clutches of as many as 17,000 eggs. This prolific breeding, paired with male-only parental defense.
