About the African Catfish

The African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus, is a sleek, eel-like predator that glides through Africa’s lakes, rivers, swamps and even the murky channels of urban sewage systems. Its dark gray to black back fades to a stark white belly, and its flat bony head supports a wide, terminal mouth framed by four pairs of whisker-like barbels. Adults typically measure 1–1.5 m, can reach 1.7 m and weigh up to 60 kg, dwarfing many of their freshwater cousins. Beneath the gills lie large accessory breathing organs that let the fish gulp air, a trait that fuels its notorious ability to crawl across dry ground when pools evaporate, surviving in shallow mud until the rains return. Nocturnal and opportunistic, this catfish devours anything it can swallow, insects, crustaceans, small mammals, other fish, eggs, and even whole waterbirds such as the common moorhen, while also nibbling fruit and seeds that drift into its habitat. During spawning, pairs meet in shallow, inundated waters at night; the male curls around the female’s head, releases a batch of milt and eggs, and the female’s tail fans the fertilized mass across the water. The larvae hatch within two to three days, already capable of swimming, and parental care ends with the careful selection of a suitable spawning site. Its occasional croaking, reminiscent of a crow’s call, adds an unexpected soundtrack to the night-time riverscape.
