Spotted Sorubim

Fascinating facts about the Spotted Sorubim

• A spotted sorubim can grow up to 200 cm long and weigh up to 120 kg, with females being the larger sex.
• When flood waters rise from December to June, these catfish embark on a river-to-nursery trek that mirrors the migration of the silver-scaled Prochilodus lineatus, timing their journey to the same currents that bring abundant food for their offspring.
• A single female can unleash hundreds of thousands of yellow, telolecithal eggs in one spawning event, then leaves the helpless larvae – just 4.5 mm long – to fend for themselves, a reproductive gamble that floods the river with potential new hunters.
• Males reach sexual maturity at about 64 cm after three years, while females mature earlier at 59 cm in 2.5 years, yet the females later outgrow the males, showing a rare pattern where the smaller sex grows up first but the larger sex catches up later.
• Although the species was first recorded in the fossil record as a neurocranium fragment from the late Pleistocene Carcarañá River, that lone bone is the only known fossil of the entire genus, underscoring how recent and fragile the spotted sorubim’s evolutionary story really is.
