• An echidna's tongue is longer than its body — up to 27 centimetres of sticky, worm-catching muscle that shoots in and out 20 times per second. It's so specialised that the tongue has no attachment at the back of the mouth; instead it's anchored to the breastbone. This is the only mammal on Earth with this bizarre anatomy, and it lets an echidna hoover up 20,000 ants or termites in a single day without ever chewing.
• Echidnas have been walking the Australian landscape for 30 million years, which means they survived every mass extinction event since, including the asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs. They were here before Australia drifted to its current position, before the Great Barrier Reef formed, and they've barely changed. They're living fossils that predate most of the animals alive today.
• Male echidnas have ten-banded penises — literally ten separate shafts bundled together. During breeding season, only four bands become active at any one time, then they rotate which ones work. No other mammal has anything like this anatomy, and scientists still don't fully understand why evolution sculpted it this way. It's a reminder that the strangest solutions often hide in plain sight.
• An echidna's spines aren't for stabbing — they're for anchoring. When threatened, it digs down into the soil or wedges into a rock crevice, flattening its body and locking its spines into the ground like geological anchors. A determined dingo or snake can't pull it out. The spines are modified hairs made of keratin (same as human fingernails), and they double as insulation in cold mountain forests.
• Echidnas are one of only five egg-laying mammals on Earth, and they're the only ones that curl into a ball. A female lays a single leathery egg into a temporary pouch on her belly and carries it for 10 days until it hatches. The puggle (baby echidna) then feeds on milk secreted through pores in the skin — not through nipples — meaning the mother never actually holds it to her body. It's motherhood divorced from touch, a 30-million-year-old shortcut that somehow works.
