About the South Andean Huemul

Tucked into the glacial valleys and ancient forests of Patagonia, the South Andean huemul is a deer shaped entirely by one of the world's harshest terrains. Stocky, wary, and wrapped in dense hollow fur against the Andean cold, it lives in landscapes so remote that researchers sometimes travel for days to observe a single individual. Chile honours it on its coat of arms while simultaneously struggling to protect the last 1,500 that remain.
