The Chacoan peccary had been known only from fossils — dead for millions of years — until a living population was found in the Gran Chaco, a bone-dry scrubland across Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. • A Chacoan peccary's stomach is a specialized fermentation chamber divided into three chambers, so efficient at breaking down woody plants and cactus that it can survive on food sources that would starve most other hoofed mammals. They spend their entire day eating just enough to extract maximum nutrition from near-worthless desert vegetation — a metabolic strategy honed across 7 million years in one of Earth's harshest habitats.
