- Thought extinct for decades, the Chacoan peccary shocked scientists when living individuals were found in Argentina. First described in 1930 from fossils, researchers assumed it vanished forever. Then, in 1971, a wild herd was spotted in Salta Province, proving the species had survived unnoticed. This rare comeback makes it a textbook example of a Lazarus taxon, reminding us that even well-studied groups can hide living relics in remote corners.
- Living in the blistering Gran Chaco, the peccary has built a body plan for dust and thorns. The region spans roughly 140,000 km² of low-lying succulents and thorny scrub, where dry, dusty air is constant. To breathe cleanly, the animal evolved well-developed sinuses that filter out particles. Its tiny feet let it slip between spiny plants without snagging.
- Peccaries travel in tight herds of up to 20 individuals, moving together each morning across their home range.
