Fascinating facts about the Yak

• A yak can survive at 5,400 metres above sea level — higher than any other large land mammal on Earth. Their blood carries 25% more oxygen per litre than lowland cattle, and each red blood cell is packed with an extra copy of a gene that helps haemoglobin grab oxygen from thin air. They're built for a world where most creatures would simply pass out.
• Yaks produce a grunt so distinctive that scientists named the entire species after the sound: *grunniens* means 'grunting' in Latin. They don't moo. They don't bellow. They grunt constantly to stay in contact with herds across windy plateaus where visual signals fail, turning their voice into a survival tool.
• A yak's coat has two layers working like a thermos: long guard hairs shed water and wind, while the undercoat is eight times warmer than sheep's wool and traps dead air the way modern insulation does. Nomads have used yak hair to weave blankets for 4,000 years — the same principle keeps their bodies above 37°C in temperatures that plummet to minus 40°C.
• Female yaks don't reach sexual maturity until age 3, and even then they breed only every other year because pregnancy and nursing drain so much energy at altitude. A herd of 200 yaks might produce only 20 calves annually. In a landscape where grass grows for just four months, reproduction moves at the pace of the plateau itself.
• Yaks can drink salt water from mountain lakes that would poison other livestock, thanks to specialized kidneys that filter sodium and mineral salts with extreme efficiency. On a plateau where fresh water freezes solid half the year and vegetation is sparse, this ability means they can survive in places that would leave sheep and cattle starving or dying of thirst.
