Fascinating facts about the Coruro

• A coruro's teeth never stop growing — they must gnaw constantly or their incisors will curl back and pierce their own skull. Underground, they chisel through rock-hard soil with teeth that regrow throughout their entire life, leaving a maze of tunnels up to 600 metres long beneath a single hectare of grassland.
• These rodents are born blind, hairless, and helpless — yet within weeks they're excavating soil harder than concrete. A coruro pup's teeth begin pushing through while still in the burrow, and it starts digging within days of opening its eyes. By adulthood it will move more earth per day than an animal 100 times its size.
• Coruros are among the few mammals that live in 'eusocial' colonies, like bees or ants — a queen breeds while workers tunnel, a system so rare in mammals it's been discovered in fewer than a dozen species on Earth. A single colony can contain 15 individuals cooperating to maintain their underground city, each with a defined role.
• Despite living their entire lives underground in the temperate forests of southern Chile, coruros navigate without eyes — they 'see' through vibrations in the soil, detecting prey and colony-mates through touch and seismic sensing. Their sense of smell is so acute they can locate sprouting seeds buried 20 centimetres deep.
• A coruro's bite force rivals that of a rodent three times its weight, concentrated through teeth so sharp and enamel so dense that they can gnaw through wood, bone, and soil layers that would stall other burrowing mammals. This extreme jaw power is why they dominate underground ecosystems across the Andes — they simply outdigging every competitor.
